The Secret Place
Psa.91:1 NKJV “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
The Lord is really highlighting the secret place to me this year. It seems to be popping up everywhere! He is calling us to more. What an invitation! If we really think about it, the God of the universe – our Heavenly Father, is inviting us to spend time with Him. With HIM – wow!
The invitation to abide in the secret place is conditional on our part – Psalm 91:1 says, "he or she who dwells"…what does it mean to dwell? To dwell means: to live as a resident, to reside; to exist in some place or state; to fasten one’s attention; linger. Other definitions take it even further: to be fully present in a place or with a person, to settle in, or engage with someone other than oneself. So, to walk out this Scripture, if we dwell in the secret place of the Most High, it’s referring to where we live and with whom we live, Him.
It's important that we intentionally choose to take time with Him, because if you’re like me with the busyness of life, if I don’t make spending time with Him a priority, it simply may not happen that day! We need time with Him and in His presence – no script, no agenda.
It may seem overwhelming to some who might find it awkward, hard, or think it’s going to be silent, quiet, or non-stimulating. But no - on the contrary! Whether you have had a thriving relationship with Him for years, are newly establishing one, or are reigniting one; we all need to come and dwell with Him.
I love the fact that this practice is called a “secret place". How wonderful to meet in a certain special spot. Some may find a cozy spot in their room or backyard which is certainly wonderful but it’s not necessarily about the where. It’s more about the daily decision to set aside a time and place to meet which deals more with the posture of the heart more so than the geographic location. Still, that special place really has powerful significance.
You’ve likely heard the saying, “same time, same place” when meeting with other people. The same is true for meeting with Him. With the busyness of life there are those days where a rescheduling of the timeframe may be needed. I’ve had times when I was completely drained at the end of the day, but it was my time to be with Him, so I sat or laid before Him and He impressed on me to just simply be, in His presence while He loved on me. It was my dedication to Him, even while being tired that He honored and blessed me in response to my faithfulness. I learned, just don’t give up! Keep coming, keep pursuing. He is waiting for you.
The verse wouldn’t be complete without the second half of the verse – “shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” If you are under the shadow of the Almighty, then you are intimately close to Him! I picture Him towering over me large enough to cast a shadow. He is after all the Most High!
The secret place creates a secure, safe closeness that this world can never offer. It’s a place of intimacy with the Father. Being transparent, free, safe – knowing He loves and accepts me just as I am. The desires and plans that He has for all of us, we will never really fully know if we don’t get to know Him first. So, plan and even schedule your time with Him today. Your willingness to do so proves your sincerity to follow through.
Engagement:
Take 5 minutes alone with God today. Add to it little by little. You will soon find it won’t be enough. It will be exciting to see where you will be in your relationship with Him by the end of the year!
